THE CHALLENGE

For several years, the city of Dijon has been leading an ambitious project to become a fully connected smart city of the future (OnDijon). This policy aims to harness the power of smart technologies to make residents’ day-to-day lives easier, to improve their living environment and to advance ecological transition.

For this project, the city proposed to the ESTP (Special School for Public Works, Building and Industry) and the ESEO (Graduate School of Engineering) to construct a new smart and sustainable building: the Campus Métropolitain. The goal was to design a building that is smart, environmentally friendly and comfortable for occupants.

THE SOLUTION

With an environmentally responsible and interconnected design as well as exemplary energy consumption, the Campus Métropolitain appears to meet all of these challenges. Thanks to its BOS (Building Operation System), the structure is fully controlled by smart technology using real-time information. Sensors installed throughout the building can control and regulate the temperature, air quality and lighting. One of the building’s impressive, connected solutions is SageGlass smart windows, which tint and clear based on temperature and occupancy, and fits perfectly into the smart building ecosystem. Smart building connectivity does more than just make surroundings comfortable and tailor them to occupants’ needs; it also saves energy.

In addition to its low energy consumption, the building’s environmentally friendly design integrates several sustainable solutions, such as solar panels on the roof, infrared heating panels on the ceiling and numerous low-carbon materials.

THE BENEFITS

Given the challenges involved in constructing this building, incorporating SageGlass was virtually a given. Electrochromic glass actually results in energy savings since it controls the heat and light entering the building. Thanks to the information it receives in real time, the glass tints and clears to adapt to occupants’ needs and maximize their comfort. These features mean this connected solution seamlessly integrates into any type of smart building.

In short, the Campus Métropolitain showcases sustainable and connected solutions, and serves as a major model for students and future engineers, who will be at the forefront of future projects.
