TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center (USA)

THE CHALLENGE

TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota is the official practice facility for the US National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild. The fifth floor ice rink was built on top of a historic Macy’s department store, a Saint Paul landmark since it’s construction in 1963. Redeveloped by the Saint Paul Port Authority in partnership with the Hempel Companies, Treasure Island Center features state-of-the-art practice facilities for the Minnesota Wild, along with office and retail space.

The unique challenge for the developers and Minnesota-based Collaborative Design Group, was to find a solution for maintaining ice temperatures, and controlling glare for players, while also allowing for a large west-facing façade of glass which reaches up to 5 meters high.

THE SOLUTION

SageGlass proved to be the ideal solution for maintaining ice conditions and maximizing the view of downtown Saint Paul while also blocking glare and heat gain. By dynamically changing tint in response to the sun, SageGlass increases occupant comfort while maintaining a connection to the outdoors without the need for blinds or shades.

THE BENEFITS

“The glass exterior SageGlass installed at TRIA Rink is a signature piece of this project, and to our knowledge, a first for a hockey arena,” said Jamie Spencer, Minnesota Wild Executive Vice President of Business Development. “The views of downtown Saint Paul from our new practice facility are incredible and something both the team and the public will enjoy for years to come.”

SageGlass provides different tint levels to accommodate the varying needs for solar control throughout the day, depending on sky conditions and the position of the sun. During the day, TRIA Rink managers can tint SageGlass to keep Minnesota Wild players comfortable during practice and free from glare. At night they have the option of setting the glass to clear, offering an exhilarating recreational experience for local youth hockey teams who use the facility.
