Ashford Castle (Ireland)
The history of Ashford Castle in County Mayo dates back to 1228. This stunning castle and its 350 acre estate was once home to the Guinness family, and is now a luxury 5 Star, award-winning hotel. As part of a major refurbishment, a new leisure facility has been built offering spectacular views over the lake and gardens.
With the unveiling of its new spa, Ireland’s fabled Ashford Castle has undergone a $75 million restoration, initiated after Red Carnation Hotels added the property to its international portfolio of boutique hotels in 2013. The renovations are in keeping with the 800-year-old castle’s historical grandeur.
The client’s main requirement was to control glare and heat gain on the glazed south and west façade, whilst also providing an unobstructed view of the landscape outside.
To meet this objective, SageGlass® dynamic glass was specified as part of 130 m² of a Schüco Curtain Walling system.
By managing daylight and solar heat gain whilst maintaining exterior views on lake and gardens, it improves comfort levels for occupant. By blocking 99% of visible radiation in its darkest state, SageGlass® also protects from glare, a benefit of particular importance to a spa.
As a bonus for Ashford Castle, SageGlass® helps reduce energy consumption. In winter, for example, the glazing can be kept in its highest transmission state when maximum solar light and warmth are desired, helping to bring natural heat inside the building.
By installing SageGlass® in its spa, Ashford Castle has admirably combined history and modernity. Its clients are now able to experience a more enjoyable and comfortable stay when utilising its swimming pool and sports facilities due to the prevention of excess glare and unwanted solar heat gain.
