Fenestration systems are an increasingly critical part of building design and construction because they are at the intersection of sometimes competing goals. On one hand you have sustainability goals, the drive for buildings to become net-zero energy, or even carbon neutral. This makes the inclusion of glazing a challenge. On the other hand you have wellness goals, among them is a drive to include more glazing to maximize daylight and outdoor views because these both have salutary impacts on people. This tension presents a challenge for designers as people don’t want to choose between energy efficient or “healthful” buildings.
In a recent print CE course, Architectural Record provides a good primer on these issues, while highlighting an array of innovative fenestration products, including dynamic glass. The course provides constructive and actionable guidance for designers looking to find the best possible balance between the goals of wellness and energy efficiency. If you want to get a head-start on your 2019 CE credits this course is the way to go!
