Swissmill Tower, Zurich (Switzerland)

The Swissmill silo measuring 118 metres high in Sihlquai, Zurich consists of a base, with a tower approximately 70 metres high. The windowless tower contains 45 storage units in which various types of grain are stored separately. On the uppermost level, there is a conference room that has windows offering a panoramic view over the city of Zurich.

Challenge

The project architects wanted to ensure that the conference room’s occupants could not only enjoy the most natural light possible, but also benefit from glare and heat gain protection. Given the wind factor due to the height of the room, sun control systems installed on the exterior were not an option. The architects also wanted the building’s occupants to enjoy the breathtaking views the tower offers of the city, even on sunny days. While searching for glass that would offer effective solar control against heat gain, the designers quickly realised that the glass most commonly used on the market was too dark or did not absorb enough heat and sun radiation. Electrochromic glass appeared to be the perfect solution.

Solution

SageGlass offered the perfect solution for the project: electrochromic glass that darkens or clears automatically in harmony with outside light conditions, or manually, for example according to specific needs during a conference presentation. This enables the amount of natural light and unwanted heat and glare infiltrating the conference room to be regulated, while the building’s occupants are protected from glare: optimal indoor thermal and visual comfort is ensured at all times. The level of transparency of SageGlass can be regulated in four tint levels, ranging from 1% to 60% light transmission: the clear view remains uninterrupted regardless of the degree of darkness.

Benefits

The occupants of the conference room towering over the city of Zurich can now enjoy completely unobstructed views of Zurich, including when the sun is shining brightly. Owing to reduced energy use, the inside temperature always remains at a comfortable level.
