How Do Smart Windows Decarbonize Buildings?

Reduce Overall Energy Usage

Unlike traditional solutions which are static, smart windows respond to real-time conditions blocking excess light and heat and reducing overall HVAC usage by 5-15%.

Lower Peak Summertime Demand

While smart windows reduce cooling loads even during winter months, they are exceptionally effective in hotter periods and can reduce peak summertime energy demand by 25% or more.

Eliminate Conventional Shading Solutions

SageGlass is comparable to or lower than the embodied carbon of a conventional low-e IGU plus exterior shading solution and outperforms interior solutions like blinds and shades at preventing glare and heat gain. Because traditional shading solutions are partial solutions that can’t adequately address both glare and heat gain multiple solutions are often required, adding to the overall carbon cost of a building.

FAQs

How do smart windows save energy?

Electrochromic glass can significantly improve the energy efficiency of buildings by reducing loads on HVAC systems.  Smart windows respond to changes in the environment, limiting the heat or cold entering the space and helping building owners cut energy costs year-round.  Smart windows can help achieve green building certifications.

How much energy do smart windows save?

This varies based on climate zone, size of building, amount of glass, and other project-specific variables. Generally, smart class can reduce energy loads up to 15% and reduce peak energy loads up to 26%.

Are EPDS, HPDS and embodied carbon information available for smart windows?

You can find SageGlass's EPD and HPD here, along with info on embodied carbon.

Can electrochromic glass help me get LEED Credits?

Yes. Smart windows can help your project earn LEED v4.1, v4, and 2009 v3 credits in several categories.

How does electrochromic glass compare in terms of sustainability to other solar control solutions?

With the dynamic nature of smart windows, the facade can truly respond to the outdoors to be able to optimize to your building's energy goals. Because the glass has a very low SHGC value in its tinted state, it can prevent excess heat gain and reduce energy consumption from HVAC.  Dynamic glass also allows the facade to harness passive heat in climates with significant heat loads.
