The Challenge
Myrtle Beach International Airport has faced rapidly growing passenger volume and needed to expand Concourse A with six new gates while modernizing existing spaces. The design vision included a dramatic double‑height curtainwall and expansive clerestory windows, intended to create a bright, welcoming destination at the end of the concourse.
However, a predominantly glass façade—especially with west‑facing exposure—posed significant challenges related to solar heat gain, glare, and occupant comfort. Maintaining clear views of the airfield while preventing hotspots and uneven temperatures was essential for both travelers and airport staff.
The Solution
SageGlass was chosen as the ideal solution to meet the project’s performance and design requirements. Installed throughout the concourse, the dynamic glass automatically tints in response to sunlight, adapting continuously to changing conditions and supporting a comfortable environment throughout the day. Combined with the double‑height curtainwall and clerestory daylighting strategy, SageGlass enabled MYR to achieve a modern, open, light‑filled concourse without introducing the unintended consequences of heat and glare.
