The Challenge

The Chicago Shakespeare Theater produces award-winning plays on stages around the world. At home in Chicago on iconic Navy Pier, the theater decided to build a new performance venue – the Yard. Connected to two existing theaters, the Yard features a series of mobile “towers” that allow the theater space to be configured in a variety of shapes and sizes, making it a truly dynamic space.

The south-facing façade of the crescent-shaped lobby posed a unique challenge to British theater design firm Charcoalblue and architects at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. The potential for uncomfortable thermal heat gain and glare, obstructed views, and fading of interior elements made choosing the right glazing critical for the success of the space.

Not only did the SageGlass solve the thermal issues, but it also offered the opportunity to create numerous façade expressions, creating a ‘technological veil’ for the lobby that the client can manipulate as required. The result is a beautiful and diverse experience consistent with the concept of The Yard.

The Solution

SageGlass was installed on the south façade of The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare. SageGlass tints on demand to provide visitors to The Yard fantastic views of Lake Michigan unencumbered by blinds or shades. It also ensures freedom from unwanted heat gain and uncomfortable glare and ensures the protection of interior design elements from sun damage and fading.
