An urban function space installs SageGlass® to save energy, improve occupant comfort and preserve the beautiful city views.

Saint Paul RiverCentre is the premier convention center in downtown Saint Paul, Minn., part of a complex that includes Xcel Energy Center arena and The Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Facility managers replaced view- and light-blocking mechanized shades with SageGlass electronically tintable glass on the east side of the boardroom. The installation has successfully solved longstanding solar glare and heat gain problems without reducing natural light infiltration or compromising the views of downtown Saint Paul and the Mississippi Riverfront below, even when the sun’s rays are the harshest.

The SageGlass installation is part of Saint Paul RiverCentre’s sustainability initiative to achieve an 80% carbon footprint reduction and 20% greater energy-efficiency in three years. Saint Paul RiverCentre/Xcel Energy Center is the first complex in the world to receive LEED, Green Globes and APEX/ASTM certification.

SageGlass contributes to the facility’s sustainability goal by modulating light, heat gain and glare while maximizing daylight. Using light sensors, the dynamic glazing automatically tints or clears within minutes, significantly reducing energy consumed for air conditioning, heating and lighting.

This installation employs larger-sized SageGlass, made possible by SAGE’s new 324,000-square-foot high-volume manufacturing facility. The plant is capable of producing SageGlass in high volumes and in larger commercial architectural sizes at an affordable cost.
