Rhaetian Railway

THE CHALLENGE

The Rhätische Bahn, or Rhaetian Railway (RhB), is one of the best-known rail companies in Switzerland. Its trains have transported local passengers and tourists across Grisons since 1889 and offer outstanding rail journeys through extraordinary mountain landscapes. The rail company’s brands include Bernina Express, Glacier Express and the UNESCO World Heritage RhB.

RhB was planning a new site in Landquart for the emergency response team. The building was set to be the largest in its history and combine industrial and office spaces under one roof. The glass facade was designed to offer views of the surrounding scenery and passing trains. The right solution had to offer a pleasant working environment for staff while meeting the company’s sustainability guidelines.

THE SOLUTION

The SageGlass Climatop Classic smart electrochromic glass offered a high-quality and innovative solution for the window facade. The 6,458-square-foot facade can be controlled automatically or manually via a touch panel to provide shade electronically where required. Combining protection from the sun, glare and heat, the glazing’s operating principle allowed the building to forgo external sunshades completely.

As a result, the solar protection offered by the electrochromic glass boosts focus and productivity for the company’s workforce of around 70 employees. Thanks to SageGlass, the whole open-plan office space can be used, as no distance needs to be left between furniture and blinds. With the smart facade’s UV protection, materials and equipment inside are also protected from fading and discoloration.
