The Challenge

To flip the script on the traditional ambiance of casinos—relatively dark, windowless spaces—the project team behind the new Chicken Ranch Casino Resort in Jamestown, California wanted to bring in plenty of natural light and connect guests with the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Nearly 8,000 square feet of glass, which surround the casino floor on three sides, needed to achieve a tricky balance: to provide guests with ample natural light and views of the nearby mountains, while minimizing glare on gaming devices and security cameras.

 

The Solution

Chicken Ranch Casino Resort worked with WORTHGROUP, its architecture partner, to select SageGlass for the casino’s large expanses of windows—a happy reunion, since the design team first used SageGlass several years ago for a conference center at the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Minnesota. “Smart windows allowed us to retain unobstructed views, and the performance far exceeded our initial expectations,” said Douglas Worth, founder at WORTHGROUP Architects & Designers.

SageGlass tints automatically in response to the sun, maximizing light and outdoor views while preventing uncomfortable heat and glare for guests. It offers benefits for casino operations, too, as sensitive gaming computer screens and security devices can operate without glare. Guests who attended the casino’s opening day festivities in summer 2024 “were surprised and thrilled with unexpected amounts of natural light and the enveloping views from within the multi-level entertainment atrium, as sun and cloud movements subtly adjusted the space’s ambience via SageGlass,” said Bryan Hamlin, partner and CDO at WORTHGROUP.

 

Rarely do we have a project site as beautiful as at the new Chicken Ranch Casino Resort and the integration of SageGlass facilitated the owner’s vision of unexpected transparency connecting guests to spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and Yosemite National Park in the distance.
